Why ‘Darasa’ Initiative

We have been supporting a school in the Laikipia district of Kenya, near Naro Moru, with a school food program for many years. A$1,000 can provide ‘Uji’ for lunch for 200 students for a 3 month term.

On occasion when the region is experiencing severe drought, this food is virtually the only food that the students receive each day.

As the students now attend school, the next challenge is to attract and retain the teachers.

Poor quality classrooms result in a high turnover of teachers. ‘Wooden’ structure classrooms deteriorate quickly because of termites. Gaps in the walls and roofs mean that rain and wind can penetrate.
